Description: Il plasma è un gas ionico quasi neutro (cioè in equilibrio di carica) composto da ioni positivi ed elettroni negativi. Le proprietà del plasma sono così diverse da quelle dei normali gas neutri che il plasma è considerato un "quarto stato della materia". Il plasma può formarsi ad alte temperature (come nelle stelle) o per foto-ionizzazione (come nel gas interstellare). Il plasma si trova nel mezzo interstellare, nel mezzo interplanetario sotto forma di vento solare, nella magnetosfera planetaria e nel mezzo intergalattico. Si stima che il 99% della materia nell'Universo osservabile sia allo stato di plasma.
