Glossary term: Materia oscura
Description: La materia oscura è una forma di materia che ha una massa, ma è completamente trasparente e non emette luce. È stata ipotizzata come spiegazione congiunta di una serie di fenomeni legati alle interazioni gravitazionali.
Le prime prove dell'esistenza della materia oscura provenivano dalle galassie negli ammassi di galassie, che si muovevano a velocità relativamente elevate. L'ipotesi di una massa aggiuntiva serviva a spiegare perché, nonostante la loro velocità, le galassie in questione erano legate gravitazionalmente al loro ammasso invece di fuggire. Le misure effettuate da Vera Rubin e altri sulle velocità di orbita delle stelle e del gas nelle galassie a disco hanno portato a una più ampia accettazione del concetto di materia oscura: in questo caso, le consuete leggi di gravità richiedono una massa considerevole in aggiunta alla materia visibile per spiegare le elevate velocità di rotazione osservate. Più recentemente, le osservazioni di lensing gravitazionale hanno indicato una notevole massa non luminosa negli ammassi di galassie.
In cosmologia, la storia dell'espansione dell'universo indica che c'è più materia nell'universo di quanta ne venga considerata sotto forma di materia luminosa. La spiegazione comune della crescita della struttura nell'universo primordiale si basa anche sulla presenza di materia oscura. Per questi motivi, i modelli cosmologici standard vengono definiti "modelli Lambda CDM", dove CDM sta per materia oscura fredda (che si muove lentamente).
La natura della materia oscura è un argomento di intensa ricerca e dibattito sia in cosmologia che in fisica delle particelle. L'evidenza della materia oscura rimane indiretta, basandosi sulle osservazioni degli effetti della massa della materia oscura sulla materia luminosa o sulla luce. Esistono diverse proposte di specie di particelle elementari non ancora rilevate che potrebbero costituire la materia oscura, ma gli esperimenti creati per trovare prove dirette di queste particelle candidate non hanno finora avuto successo. Sono state proposte anche tesi alternative che spiegano le osservazioni pertinenti senza il coinvolgimento di nuove specie di particelle.
