Description: Una nana rossa è una stella piccola e di piccola massa con una temperatura effettiva inferiore a 3900K (~3600 °C). All'occhio umano appaiono più rosse delle stelle gialle simili al Sole, ma non esistono nane rosse visibili a occhio nudo. Le stelle con massa compresa tra l'8% e il 50% circa della massa del Sole trascorrono la maggior parte della loro vita come nane rosse. Queste stelle fondono l'idrogeno a un ritmo molto più lento rispetto alle stelle come il Sole, e sono quindi più deboli, ma possono sostenere la fusione dell'idrogeno molto più a lungo. Molte nane rosse hanno campi magnetici molto forti che provocano un maggior numero di tempeste magnetiche e di macchie stellari rispetto alle stelle come il Sole. La maggior parte delle stelle della Via Lattea sono nane rosse, così come la maggior parte delle stelle entro 10 parsec dal Sole.
