Glossary term: Via Lattea
Description: La Via Lattea è la nostra galassia. È un insieme di circa 100-400 miliardi di stelle. Il nostro Sistema Solare si trova a circa 26.600 anni luce dal centro della Via Lattea. Nel cielo notturno possiamo vederla come una debole fascia che si estende attraverso il cielo con il suo centro nella costellazione del Sagittario. La Via Lattea è una galassia a spirale relativamente grande e la distribuzione delle stelle al suo interno si estende per circa 100.000 anni luce lungo il disco, con uno spessore di circa 1000 anni luce. Questo disco è circondato da un alone di stelle molto più rado. Oltre alle stelle, la Via Lattea è composta dal mezzo interstellare e dalla materia oscura. Mentre il mezzo interstellare è limitato per lo più al disco, l'alone di materia oscura circostante si estende a distanze molto maggiori. Il centro della Via Lattea ospita un buco nero supermassiccio che ha una massa pari a circa 4 milioni di volte quella del Sole.
