Glossary term: Stella di tipo M
Description: Una stella di tipo spettrale "M". Gli astronomi identificano le stelle di tipo M per la presenza di bande di assorbimento molecolari, principalmente dall'ossido di titanio, nei loro spettri. Hanno temperature tipiche (effettive) comprese tra circa 2500 kelvin (K) e 3700 K. Rispetto alle altre stelle, appaiono rosse all'occhio umano. Le stelle di sequenza principale di tipo spettrale M sono note come nane rosse. Le stelle di tipo M possono anche essere Giganti Rosse o Supergiganti Rosse; queste classi sono per lo più stelle di tipo M, ma comprendono anche alcune stelle di tipo K e alcuni tipi di stelle più esotiche con marcate caratteristiche spettrali del carbonio. Betelgeuse in Orione è una supergigante di tipo M.
