Glossary term: Barra galattica

Description: Molte galassie a spirale presentano una struttura a barra nella loro regione centrale, in cui la maggior parte delle stelle, del gas e della polvere si estendono seguendo un andamento rettilineo. I bracci a spirale della galassia iniziano ai bordi esterni di questa barra. Le galassie a spirale con una barra sono chiamate galassie a spirale barrata. Si ritiene che la Via Lattea sia una galassia a spirale barrata.
