Glossary term: Galassia ellittica

Description: Una galassia ellittica è un tipo di galassia dall'aspetto regolare ed ellittico, come una sfera compressa lungo uno o due assi, a differenza delle galassie a disco che appaiono completamente schiacciate. Di solito è costituita soprattutto da stelle vecchie di colore giallo-rosso. Le galassie ellittiche tipicamente contengono una ridotta quantità di gas, e la loro formazione stellare è decisamente modesta rispetto a quella delle galassie a spirale.
