Equal Day

Published: 10th March 2025 13:00 (UTC)

On March the 20th, the Equal Day, day of the equinox, when daylight and darkness are in perfect balance across the globe, we are reminded of the natural harmony that exists—a harmony reflecting the principles of equality.

This occasion will unite people from all corners of the world, bound by a collective awe for the peace that the universe calls for.

The idea of Equal Day event is simple. It is a call for anyone who would like to join, from all around the world, to organize an event on March 20, that will promote astronomy as a message of peace. The event is promoted by the IAU Office of Astronomy Education Center Italy. The PI and the project creator is Jean-Pierre Saghbini, NAEC Lebanon, supported by many other NAECs in the region (see the section "supporters" on the website).

To join it will be enough to register the event on the website: www.equalday.org

The event can hold any activity that promotes equality, peace, diversity, sustainability, and empathy through astronomy.

The event should also include at least one of the following mandatory activities:

  • A- Creative Photography
Design a creative photography/painting/media content during your equal day event referencing equality, peace and astronomy and post it on social media with #equalday tag @equalday.
  • B- A message of Peace

  • C- Zoom Meetings
Organisers of the event can participate in one of the three different zoom meetings to present their event in 3 minutes.

How it all began

The concept of advancing equality, peace, diversity and compassion through astronomy took root since the 1st STEAM-MEDiderranean School held in Lampedusa, Italy, organized by the Office of Astronomy Education Center Italy and flourished during the MASTED meeting of regional and Mediterranean nations in Turkey.
What initially started as a school of Astronomy for National Astronomy Education Coordinators (NAECs) quickly evolved into a global initiative with a powerful message: the sky is for everyone.
