Glossary term: Horizontal Branch
Description: As estrelas que estão fundindo hélio em carbono em seus núcleos são chamadas de estrelas do ramo horizontal. O nome surgiu porque essas estrelas se encontram ao longo de um ramo horizontal no diagrama de Hertzsprung-Russell, exibindo uma faixa de temperaturas de "superfície" (temperaturas efetivas), mas com luminosidade quase constante. São estrelas que evoluíram além da fase de gigante vermelha com quantidades variáveis de massa (camadas externas) perdida. As estrelas da sequência principal com massa até oito vezes maior que a massa do Sol podem passar por essa fase evolutiva.
