Description: Uma anã vermelha é uma estrela pequena, de baixa massa, com uma temperatura efetiva abaixo de 3900 kelvins (K) (~3600 graus Celsius (°C)). Para o olho humano, elas pareceriam mais vermelhas do que as estrelas amarelas semelhantes ao Sol, mas não há anãs vermelhas visíveis a olho nu. Estrelas com massas entre cerca de 8% e 50% da massa do Sol passam a maior parte de suas vidas como anãs vermelhas. Essas estrelas fundem hidrogênio em um ritmo muito mais lento do que estrelas como o Sol e, portanto, são mais fracas, mas podem manter a fusão de hidrogênio por muito mais tempo. Muitas anãs vermelhas têm campos magnéticos muito fortes, o que resulta em mais tempestades magnéticas e um número maior de manchas estelares do que estrelas como o Sol. A maioria das estrelas da Via Láctea são anãs vermelhas, assim como a maioria das estrelas a menos de 10 parsecs do Sol.
