Glossary term: 标准烛光
Description: 标准烛光是指发光光度(单位时间内发射的能量)不用考虑距离,可以通过其物理机制可以直接计算的天体,可用来估算天体到地球的距离。
对于大多数天体,天文学家都不知道它们与地球的距离。在这种情况下,很难确定我们看到的是一个遥远但非常明亮的天体,还是一个较近但不太明亮的天体--从地球上测量的视亮度在两种情况下可能是一样的。标准烛光的亮度可以在不知道其距离的情况下估算出来。然后,通过比较光度和天体在夜空中的视亮度,就可以计算出标准烛光的距离。重要的例子包括造父变星(一类存在脉动周期与光度之间关系的脉动恒星)和Ia型超新星(一类明亮的恒星爆炸,其最大光度与随后亮度下降的时间尺度之间存在关系)。
