Description: ১৯৯০ এর দশকের শেষের দিকে, খুব দূরবর্তী ছায়াপথে অবস্থিত টাইপ 1A সুপারনোভা (একশ্রেণীর বিস্ফোরিত নক্ষত্র) থেকে নির্গত আলোর পরিমাপ আমাদেরকে এটাই বুঝায় যে মহাবিশ্বের সম্প্রসারণের হার (দ্রুতি) ধ্রুবক ধরলে সুপারনোভাটিকে প্রত্যাশার তুলনায় ক্ষীণ দেখায়। পরিমাপগুলো এমন এক মহাবিশ্বের দৃশ্যকল্পের সাথে সামঞ্জস্যপূর্ণ ছিল, যেখানে সম্প্রসারণের হার ত্বরান্বিত হচ্ছিল। ত্বরান্বিত সম্প্রসারণের কারণ হিসেবে ডার্ক এনার্জিকে দায়ী করা হয়, যার প্রকৃতি এখনো অজানা এবং বর্তমান গবেষণার একটি বিষয়। ত্বরান্বিত সম্প্রসারণ খুব বড় স্কেলে ঘটছে, এবং পৃথক মহাকর্ষীয়ভাবে আবদ্ধ ছায়াপথে এর কোন উল্লেখযোগ্য প্রভাব নেই।
