Description: Ein Proton ist ein subatomares Teilchen mit positiver elektrischer Ladung. Protonen sind neben den Neutronen einer der Hauptbestandteile der Atomkerne (Nukleonen). Die Anzahl der Protonen ist die "Ordnungszahl" eines Kerns. Jedes Atom mit einer bestimmten Ordnungszahl entspricht einem bestimmten chemischen Element. Der Atomkern von Wasserstoff besteht aus einem einzigen Proton. Die grundlegendste Kernfusionsreaktion in einem Stern besteht darin, dass zwei Protonen zusammenstoßen, eines von ihnen zerfällt und ein Deuteron entsteht, das aus einem Proton und einem Neutron besteht. Protonen finden sich auch in der hochenergetischen kosmischen Strahlung, die uns aus dem Weltraum erreicht.
