Description: Unter atmosphärischer Extinktion versteht man die Streuung oder Absorption des Lichts von Himmelsobjekten beim Durchgang durch die Erdatmosphäre. Prinzipiell ist die Erdatmosphäre für das sichtbare Licht und Radiowellen sowie etwas Infrarotlicht durchlässig, weshalb bodengestützte Teleskope weit verbreitet sind. Um das Phänomen der atmosphärischen Extinktion zu vermeiden und um Licht anderer Wellenlängen zu beobachten, befinden sich einige Teleskope außerhalb der Erdatmosphäre.
