Description: Ce principe, dans sa forme originale, est le résultat du modèle copernicien du système solaire. Ce modèle "héliocentrique" stipule que les planètes gravitent autour du Soleil et remplace la croyance antérieure selon laquelle la Terre occupait une place particulière au centre du système solaire. D'un point de vue philosophique, le principe copernicien représente un changement fondamental dans la perception humaine de notre place dans l'univers. Ce changement était révolutionnaire à l'époque de Copernic. Le principe copernicien a été étendu à la cosmologie, où il est appelé principe cosmologique, qui constitue l'un des fondements essentiels de la cosmologie moderne : il n'y a pas de position ou de direction particulière dans l'Univers observable. Ces deux principes sont constamment testés par une série d'observations à différentes échelles, à l'aide de télescopes terrestres et spatiaux.
