Glossary term: Galassia irregolare

Description: Una galassia irregolare è un tipo di galassia con poca o nessuna simmetria (ha una morfologia o una forma distorta). Sono tipicamente più piccole delle galassie a spirale ed ellittiche e spesso contengono quantità significative di gas di formazione stellare. La Grande e la Piccola Nube di Magellano sono galassie irregolari, relativamente vicine (circa 160.000 anni luce e 200.000 anni luce) alla nostra Via Lattea, che possono essere osservate dall'emisfero meridionale della Terra ad occhio nudo.
