Description: La radiazione ultravioletta, abbreviata "UV", è una radiazione elettromagnetica costituita da onde elementari con lunghezza d'onda compresa tra 10 e 380 nanometri. Queste lunghezze d'onda si collocano tra i raggi X e la luce visibile. La maggior parte della radiazione UV proveniente da oggetti astronomici viene assorbita dall'atmosfera terrestre, quindi l'astronomia UV richiede necessariamente telescopi spaziali, come il telescopio spaziale Hubble o osservatori più specializzati come GALEX. La radiazione UV può essere utilizzata per studiare stelle giovani e calde, determinare la composizione chimica del mezzo interstellare, studiare l'attività solare e la corona del nostro Sole o esplorare alcune proprietà dei nuclei galattici attivi.
