Teacher training program to be held at IUCAA in Pune, India from Feb 16-17, 2024
Published: 8th February 2024 11:00 (UTC)
A teacher training program will be conducted at the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) which hosts the OAE Center India in collaboration with the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (TIFR-HBCSE). The workshop will focus on about 50 teachers in India who teach geography/science/mathematics from grades 5 - 10. The workshop will include discussions with astronomy educators, and astronomers from IUCAA and TIFR-HBCSE. The core idea of the teacher training workshop is to revisit the astronomy concepts taught in schools, explore the basics of astronomy and discuss pedagogical approaches.
How do seasons happen? How to explain the phases of the moon? How do eclipses happen? What about tides in the sea? Over the two day workshop, the teachers will hear about these astronomy concepts taught in schools through models, role play, and other activities. They will come up with ways to teach these concepts to school children and clear common misconceptions commonly faced by children.
The workshop will also include a novel component where teachers divide themselves into groups and design a model lesson plan for teaching one of these concepts and showcase the interdisciplinarity of astronomy.
Registration for this workshop has closed but any interested teachers can still watch the workshop on Youtube.
