Glossary term: Teleskopi Hapësinor
Description: Rrezatimi elektromagnetik nga hapësira duhet të kalojë fillimisht përmes atmosferës së Tokës përpara se të mund të mblidhet nga teleskopët në Tokë. Rrezet gama, rrezet X, rrezatimi ultraviolet dhe disa lloje të rrezatimit infra të kuq filtrohen plotësisht nga atmosfera. Për t’i vëzhguar ato, astronomët përdorin teleskopë hapësinorë, të cilët quhen edhe observatorë hapësinorë: satelitë të automatizuar mbi atmosferë që mbajnë një teleskop dhe instrumente, si dhe pajisjet e nevojshme për të orientuar anijen kozmike drejt një objektivi të caktuar, për të marrë komandat dhe për të transmetuar të dhënat përsëri në Tokë. Siç tregon vezullimi i yjeve, edhe drita që kalon përmes atmosferës ndikohet gjatë këtij procesi. Edhe në këtë rast, teleskopët hapësinorë janë të dobishëm. Megjithatë, ata janë të vështirë për t’u riparuar. Shumica e teleskopëve hapësinorë ndodhen ose në orbitën e Tokës (si Teleskopi Hapësinor Hubble), ose në të ashtuquajturën pikë Lagrange L2 (si Teleskopi Hapësinor James Webb).

Hubble Space Telescope over Earth
Caption: The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope orbiting Earth. This picture was taken by astronauts on board the space shuttle Columbia, right after the Servicing Mission 3B to the space telescope itself. The telescope has an opening that allows light in (seen here on the left). The light travels through the telescope optics to the cameras and spectrographs located in the bulge at the other end of the observatory (seen here on the right). Data from these instruments is then sent back to Earth using an antenna. The black rectangles on either side of the observatory are the solar panels that provide it with power.
