Description: El aire que nos rodea contiene unos 10 billones de billones de moléculas por centímetro cúbico. Un vacío ideal sería una región que no contuviera ninguna molécula. En la práctica, hablamos de vacío cuando una región contiene un número de partículas considerablemente menor de lo habitual. Un «alto vacío» tiene solo una millonésima parte del número habitual de partículas por centímetro cúbico, y un «vacío ultra alto» tiene menos de mil millones de partículas por centímetro cúbico. La mayoría de las regiones del espacio exterior están aún más vacías que eso. De media, la densidad de partículas de materia ordinaria en nuestro Universo es inferior a una por metro cúbico. Lo que los astrónomos consideran relativamente denso, como una nube gigante de gas molecular, sigue siendo un vacío mejor que cualquiera que podamos producir aquí en la Tierra.
