Description: El principio cosmológico es la base de la cosmología moderna y se sustenta en observaciones y en una suposición fundamental. Establece que, desde el punto de vista espacial, el Universo es isotrópico y homogéneo a grandes escalas (escalas superiores a unos pocos cientos de millones de años luz). Las observaciones a escalas suficientemente grandes muestran que el Universo parece «tener el mismo aspecto» en cualquier dirección; no hay una dirección preferente (isotrópico). La suposición fundamental, basada en el principio de Copérnico (los seres humanos no ocupan un lugar especial en el Universo), es que el Universo es igual en todas partes (homogéneo); no parece haber ningún lugar preferente. El principio cosmológico va acompañado de la universalidad, según la cual las leyes de la física y las constantes fundamentales son las mismas en todo el Universo: aquí en la Tierra o en una galaxia lejana.
