Description: En science, l'hypothèse fait référence à une idée ou à une prédiction qu'un scientifique peut avoir. Elle peut être étayée par des preuves, mais elle n'a pas été prouvée. Ce n'est que par l'expérimentation, les observations, les données et les modèles qu'une hypothèse est progressivement affinée ou complètement écartée. Contrairement à la croyance commune, l'hypothèse n'est pas toujours la première étape du développement de la connaissance scientifique. Par exemple, les scientifiques observent des phénomènes ou des objets, analysent les données, puis proposent une explication ou font une prédiction de ce qui pourrait se passer : c'est leur hypothèse. Ce n'est que grâce à des données et des observations supplémentaires que l'hypothèse est validée ou non. Une hypothèse peut avoir une base mathématique ou commencer par une formulation mathématique qui fait une prédiction.
