Glossary term: Radiotelescopio
Description: I radiotelescopi ricevono le onde radio dallo spazio. A seconda della lunghezza d'onda di osservazione, possono avere una forma a parabola, simile a un'antenna satellitare con un ricevitore nel punto focale, oppure possono avere figure metalliche simili ad aste, che vengono talvolta chiamate antenne a dipolo. I segnali vengono poi amplificati ed elaborati da un computer. Un radiotelescopio può essere costituito da una singola parabola o da un certo numero di antenne collegate tra loro a formare un interferometro, dove uno speciale computer chiamato correlatore combina i segnali provenienti dai diversi radiotelescopi per ottenere informazioni che possono poi essere elaborate in un'immagine. I radiotelescopi osservano principalmente onde radio, con frequenze che vanno da circa 30 megahertz a 300 gigahertz, ovvero da 10 metri a 1 millimetro di lunghezza d'onda. I singoli telescopi e ricevitori sono ottimizzati per regioni specifiche all'interno di questa banda. Alcune antenne radio sono ottimizzate per osservare la luce con una lunghezza d'onda leggermente inferiore, in una regione dello spettro elettromagnetico nota come submillimetrica.
