Description: Un telescopio rifrattore è un telescopio che utilizza una lente come principale elemento di raccolta della luce. Si contrappone al telescopio riflettente, che utilizza uno specchio in questo ruolo. I telescopi rifrattori sono ancora comuni come telescopi amatoriali, dove una speciale combinazione di lenti che correggono l'effetto cromatico indesiderato ("telescopi acromatici") può produrre immagini di qualità eccellente per l'osservazione pura e per l'astrofotografia. Nell'astronomia professionale, i telescopi rifrattori sono stati ampiamente soppiantati dai telescopi a specchio a partire dai primi anni del 1900. Gli astronomi volevano aperture sempre più grandi (diametri delle lenti o degli specchi) ed è difficile realizzare telescopi rifrattori di dimensioni superiori a circa 1 metro, poiché una lente è sostenuta solo dal bordo e il suo pesante centro cede sotto la pressione della gravità, deformando la forma e le proprietà ottiche della lente.
