Description: Il termine lenticolare è usato per descrivere oggetti che hanno una forma a lente. Le galassie lenticolari (S0 o SB0) presentano caratteristiche osservative sia delle galassie a spirale che di quelle ellittiche. Le galassie lenticolari sembrano avere un disco e un rigonfiamento centrale simili a quelli delle galassie a spirale, ma senza bracci a spirale evidenti; inoltre, contengono principalmente stelle molto vecchie, come quelle dominanti nelle galassie ellittiche. Il processo di formazione delle galassie lenticolari è ancora oggetto di ricerca; tuttavia, ci sono alcune prove che esse derivino dall'interazione tra galassie.
