Glossary term: Stelle circumpolari
Description: Nella maggior parte delle località della Terra, il Polo Nord celeste o il Polo Sud celeste sono visibili nel cielo a una certa distanza al di sopra dell'orizzonte. Per un osservatore che si trova in questa posizione, le stelle sembrano ruotare intorno al polo celeste col passare del tempo: Ogni stella traccia un cerchio nel cielo, centrato sul polo celeste verso cui punta l'asse terrestre. Nei due punti in cui il cerchio attraversa l'orizzonte dell'osservatore, la stella in oggetto rispettivamente sorge e tramonta. Per le stelle abbastanza vicine al polo celeste, il cerchio tracciato si troverà completamente al di sopra dell'orizzonte. Il nostro osservatore non vedrà mai quelle stelle sorgere o tramontare. Queste stelle che non tramontano mai sono chiamate stelle circumpolari.
Le stelle circumpolari dipendono dalla latitudine geografica dell'osservatore e dalla declinazione della stella - quest'ultima è l'angolo tra la posizione della stella e l'equatore celeste. Nell'emisfero settentrionale, una stella è circumpolare se la sua declinazione è maggiore di 90° meno la latitudine dell'osservatore. Nell'emisfero meridionale, dobbiamo tenere conto del fatto che sia le latitudini meridionali della Terra, sia i valori di declinazione meridionale hanno il segno meno. Considerando questi segni, nell'emisfero meridionale una stella è circumpolare se la sua declinazione è minore di -90° meno la latitudine dell'osservatore.
