Description: 이 용어는 전자기 복사(빛)의 파장이 더 짧은 쪽으로 이동하는 현상을 말합니다. 가시광선에서 파란색이 짧은 파장 영역에 있기 때문에, 이 현상을 청색편이(Blue Shift)라고 부르게 되었습니다. 파장의 이동은 관측자와 빛을 내는 물체(전자기 복사원) 사이의 상대적인 움직임 때문에 일어납니다. 청색편이는 음파에서 들리는 도플러 효과가 빛의 영역에서 일어나는 경우라고 볼 수 있습니다. 즉, 물체가 우리 쪽으로 다가오면 파장이 짧아지고, 멀어지면 길어지는 현상입니다. 빛의 파장이 얼마나 이동했는지는, 실험실에서 정지 상태로 측정한 원소의 스펙트럼선과 관측된 물체의 스펙트럼선을 비교함으로써 알 수 있습니다. 이 비교를 통해 청색편이인지, 적색편이인지를 판단할 수 있습니다. 청색편이(또는 적색편이)는 별의 실제 색깔과는 직접적인 관련이 없습니다. 다시 말해, 밤하늘의 별이 파랗게 보인다고 해서 그것이 청색편이를 보인다는 뜻은 아닙니다.
