Description: Ez a kifejezés arra a jelenségre utal, amikor egy adott hullámhosszú elektromágneses sugárzás a rövidebb hullámhosszok felé tolódik el. A 'kék' szó a blueshiftben az emberi színlátásra vezethető vissza, mivel a kék a látható spektrum rövid hullámhosszú tartományában helyezkedik el, az eltolódás ebbe az irányba történik. A hullámhossz eltolódása a megfigyelő és a sugárzást kibocsátó forrás közötti relatív mozgás eredménye, hasonlóan a hanghullámok Doppler-effektusához. Fontos megjegyezni, hogy az elektromágneses sugárzás hullámhosszának eltolódását a laboratóriumban nyugalomban lévő elemek színképvonalainak hullámhosszához viszonyítva lehet kimutatni.
