Description: 조석고정은 조석력 때문에 천체의 자전 속도가 변하면서, 결국 자전 주기가 바뀌는 현상입니다. 가장 좋은 예는 달입니다. 달은 지구의 중력 때문에 아주 조금 늘어나 장축이 지구 쪽을 향하게 됩니다. 달이 지구 주위를 돌 때, 지구의 중력은 달의 이 ‘조석 팽대부’를 계속 끌어당깁니다. 만약 달이 회전하면서 그 긴 축이 지구를 벗어나게 되면, 조석력이 달을 다시 잡아당겨 축이 지구를 향하도록 만듭니다. 이런 과정이 계속되면서 달의 자전이 점점 느려지고, 결국 자전 주기가 공전 주기와 같아집니다. 그래서 우리는 항상 달의 같은 면만 보게 되는 것입니다.

하지만 모든 천체가 이렇게 완전히 일치하는 것은 아닙니다. 예를 들어 수성은 태양 주위를 타원형 궤도로 돌기 때문에 조금 다릅니다. 수성은 태양을 두 번 공전하는 동안 세 번 자전합니다. 즉, 수성은 ‘3 대 2의 조석고정 상태’에 있는 것입니다.
