Glossary term: Proxima Centauri
Description: Proxima Centauri, também conhecida como Alpha Centauri C, é a estrela mais próxima do Sol, a uma distância de 4,24 anos-luz (1,302 parsecs), ou cerca de 40 trilhões de quilômetros. É uma estrela anã vermelha, menor que o Sol em tamanho e massa e, portanto, muito fraca para ser vista a olho nu. No momento da redação deste artigo, há um planeta confirmado orbitando Proxima Centauri. Ele foi designado Proxima Centauri b, e sua órbita está na chamada zona habitável da estrela. Dois outros candidatos a planetas, Proxima Centauri c e d, ainda não foram confirmados. Juntamente com Alpha Centauri A e B, Proxima Centauri forma o sistema estelar Alpha-Centauri, composto por três estrelas ligadas gravitacionalmente.

Próxima Centauri, nossa vizinha estelar mais próxima

Embora seja a estrela mais próxima do Sol, ela só foi descoberta em 1915 devido à sua fraca luminosidade. Apesar da proximidade, ela aparece apenas como um objeto pontual nesta imagem, pois mesmo as estrelas mais próximas do Sol estão muito distantes quando comparadas ao seu tamanho físico.
