Description: Umbra é a palavra latina para "sombra". No contexto dos eclipses, a umbra é a região do espaço em que um observador vê um corpo bloquear completamente a luz do outro. Em um eclipse solar, por exemplo, qualquer observador na umbra verá o disco do Sol completamente coberto pelo disco da Lua. Um observador localizado na região da penumbra, por outro lado, verá apenas um eclipse parcial - no caso de um eclipse solar, o disco do Sol coberto apenas parcialmente pela Lua. Se um observador vir que o objeto de cobertura é pequeno demais para cobrir completamente o objeto atrás dele, como em um eclipse solar anular, diz-se que o observador está na antumbra.

Significado alternativo: a região interna e mais escura de uma mancha solar é chamada de umbra, e a região menos escura ao redor é chamada de penumbra.
