Description: Um sistema binário é qualquer configuração de dois objetos astronômicos de tamanho comparável que orbitam um ao outro sob a influência de sua própria gravidade. Pode ser uma estrela binária, com duas estrelas orbitando uma a outra, ou um buraco negro binário, em que ambos os objetos são buracos negros, ou um sistema binário que consiste em um buraco negro e uma estrela de nêutrons. Os objetos em um sistema binário orbitam em torno do centro de massa do sistema. Quando um dos objetos é muito mais leve que o outro, como no caso de uma estrela e um planeta, ou um planeta e uma lua, ainda é apropriado, mas menos comum, usar o termo sistema binário.
