Description: "হেলিওসেন্ট্রিক" (সূর্যকেন্দ্রিক) শব্দটি গ্রীক শব্দ "হেলিওস" থেকে এসেছে, যা সূর্যের নাম, এবং "কেন্দ্রো" যার অর্থ কেন্দ্র। সৌরজগতের এই মডেলটি সূর্যকে কেন্দ্রে স্থাপন করে এবং গ্রহগুলি এর চারপাশে প্রদক্ষিণ করে, যা ভূকেন্দ্রিক (পৃথিবী-কেন্দ্রিক) মডেলকে প্রতিস্থাপন করে। যদিও এই মডেলটির উৎপত্তির কৃতিত্ব ষোড়শ শতাব্দীতে কোপার্নিকাসকে দেওয়া হয়, সামোসের এরিস্টার্কাস প্রাচীন গ্রিসে একটি সূর্যকেন্দ্রিক মডেল তৈরি করেছিলেন। এছাড়াও, ভারত, ইউরোপ এবং ইসলামিক বিশ্বের জ্যোতির্বিজ্ঞানীরা কোপার্নিকাসের আগে এই ধরনের মডেল নিয়ে আলোচনা করেছেন। গ্যালিলিওর শুক্র গ্রহের টেলিস্কোপিক পর্যবেক্ষণের মাধ্যমে সূর্যকেন্দ্রিক মডেলের পর্যবেক্ষণমূলক প্রমাণ পাওয়া যায়। আসল সূর্যকেন্দ্রিক মডেলটি সূর্যকে সৌরজগতের জ্যামিতিক কেন্দ্রে স্থাপন করেছিল; টাইকো ব্রাহের তথ্য ব্যবহার করে কেপলারের গাণিতিক সূত্রগুলির মাধ্যমে এই দৃষ্টিভঙ্গি পরিবর্তিত হয়েছিল। নিউটন এই তত্ত্বটি তৈরি করেছিলেন এবং তার মহাকর্ষের সূত্র দিয়ে আরো সম্প্রসারিত করেছিলেন।

Copernicus's heliocentric system

In this model, the Earth is not special – it is merely one planet, among several, orbiting the Sun. This was the first example for what is now known as the Copernican Principle: that our positions as observers in the universe is not special or privileged in any way. The shift from the geocentric to the heliocentric model of our universe is known as the Copernican revolution.
