Description: Ein Mare, vom lateinischen Wort für "Meer", ist eine Reihe von dunklen, flachen Gebieten auf dem Mond, die aus Basalt bestehen. Man nimmt an, dass sie das Ergebnis vergangener vulkanischer Aktivität sind, die eine relativ glatte Landschaft im Vergleich zum hellen, älteren, zerklüfteten Hochland des Mondes hinterlassen hat. Ihr Name rührt daher, dass sie wie flache, wässrige Meere aussehen. Heute wissen wir, dass diese Gebiete sehr trocken sind und kein Oberflächenwasser aufweisen.

Das Mare Tranquillitatis (Meer der Ruhe) war der Ort der Landung von Apollo 11, der ersten astronautischen Mission, die auf dem Mond landete.
