Glossary term: Rama horizontal

Description: Las estrellas que fusionan helio en carbono en sus núcleos se denominan estrellas de la rama horizontal. El nombre se debe a que estas estrellas se sitúan a lo largo de una rama horizontal en el diagrama de Hertzsprung-Russell, mostrando un rango de temperaturas «superficiales» (temperaturas efectivas) pero una luminosidad casi constante. Se trata de estrellas que han evolucionado más allá de la fase de gigante roja, habiendo perdido cantidades variables de masa (capas externas). Las estrellas de la secuencia principal con una masa de hasta ocho veces la del Sol pueden pasar por esta fase evolutiva.
