Description: Horizontalast-Sterne sind Sterne, die in ihren Kernen Helium zu Kohlenstoff verbrennen. Der Name kommt daher, dass diese Sterne auf einem horizontalen Ast des Hertzsprung-Russell-Diagramms liegen und verschiedene Oberflächentemperaturen (effektive Temperaturen), aber eine nahezu konstante Leuchtkraft aufweisen. Es handelt sich dabei um ehemalige Rote Riesensterne, die während dieser Phase unterschiedlich viel Masse (äußere Schichten) verloren haben. Hauptreihensterne mit bis zu acht Sonnenmassen können diese Entwicklungsphase als Horizontalast-Stern durchlaufen.
