Glossary term: Densidad
Description: La densidad es una característica física de una sustancia u objeto que expresa la relación entre su volumen y su masa. Cuanto mayor es la densidad, mayor es la masa por unidad de volumen. La densidad media de un objeto es su masa total dividida por su volumen total. Su unidad del Sistema Internacional (SI) es el kilogramo por metro cúbico (kg/m3).
Las densidades en la región de la Vía Láctea alrededor del Sol pueden oscilar entre unos 10-20 kg/m3 para el gas interestelar y más de 1017 kg/m3 para el interior de las estrellas de neutrones.
Las densidades cotidianas en la Tierra se sitúan entre esos extremos, con el hierro a unos 7800 kg/m3, el agua a unos 1000 kg/m3 y el aire que nos rodea a nivel del mar a poco más de 1 kg/m3.
El Universo no solo incluye las estrellas, los planetas y el gas de las galaxias, sino también el espacio relativamente vacío entre galaxias y entre cúmulos de galaxias. Esto da lugar a una densidad media de la materia en el Universo del orden de 10-27 kg/m3.
