Description: A densidade é uma característica física de uma substância ou objeto que expressa a relação entre seu volume e sua massa. Quanto maior a densidade, maior a massa por unidade de volume. A densidade média de um objeto é sua massa total dividida por seu volume total. Sua unidade SI é quilogramas por metro cúbico (kg/m³).

As densidades na região da Via Láctea ao redor do Sol podem variar de cerca de 10^-20 kg/m³ para gás interestelar a mais de 10¹⁷ kg/m³ para o interior de estrelas de nêutrons.

As densidades cotidianas na Terra ficam entre esses extremos, com o ferro a cerca de 7800 kg/m³, a água a cerca de 1000 kg/m³ e o ar que nos rodeia no nível do mar a pouco mais de 1 kg/m³.

O Universo inclui não apenas as estrelas, os planetas e o gás nas galáxias, mas também o espaço relativamente vazio entre as galáxias e entre os aglomerados de galáxias. Isso leva a uma densidade média de matéria no Universo da ordem de 10^-27 kg/m³.
