Description: ابرهای ماژلانی دو کهکشان هستند که به دور کهکشان راه شیری می‌چرخند. ابر ماژلانی بزرگ (LMC) حدود ۱۴,۰۰۰ سال نوری قطر دارد و ابر ماژلانی کوچک (SMC) حدود ۷,۰۰۰ سال نوری قطر دارد. SMC یک کهکشان نامنظم است، اما LMC ممکن است پیش از آنکه توسط نیروهای کشندی ناشی از گرانش راه شیری دچار اختلال شود، ساختار مارپیچی داشته باشد. هر دو کهکشان با چشم غیرمسلح به صورت تابش‌های کم‌نور و ضعیف قابل مشاهده‌اند.

این کهکشان‌ها برای هزاران سال توسط مردم مناطق استوایی و جنوبی زمین شناخته شده و به آن‌ها نام‌های مختلفی داده شده است. ستاره‌شناسان اسلامی در قرون وسطی از طریق داستان‌های مسافران و دریانوردان با این کهکشان‌ها آشنا بودند. نام اروپایی آن‌ها از فردیناند ماژلان گرفته شده است که در سفرهایش اولین مشاهدات اروپایی از این کهکشان‌ها ثبت شد.
