Description: Le nuage de Oort est une région du Système Solaire externe qui serait possiblement à l'origine des comètes de longue période orbitale. Le nuage de Oort contient probablement des milliards de petits corps glacés issus de la formation du Système Solaire. On pense qu'il constitue le réservoir des comètes à longue période. Il arrive que l'orbite d'un de ces corps glacés soit perturbée par un autre corps glacé ou par la gravité d'une étoile passant à proximité du Système Solaire. Le corps glacé peut alors tomber vers l'intérieur du Système Solaire, où il devient une comète. Le nuage de Oort s'étend probablement de quelques milliers d'unités astronomiques (UA) à peut-être plus de cent mille UA, à mi-chemin de Proxima du Centaure, l'étoile la plus proche du Soleil. Le nuage de Oort interne a probablement la forme d'un beignet, tandis que le nuage de Oort externe ressemble probablement une coquille sphérique.
