Description: A Nuvem de Oort é uma região hipotética do Sistema Solar exterior que se acredita ser a origem dos cometas com longos períodos orbitais. A Nuvem de Oort provavelmente contém muitos bilhões de pequenos corpos gelados remanescentes da formação do Sistema Solar. Acredita-se que ela forme o reservatório dos cometas de longo período. Ocasionalmente, um desses objetos congelados terá sua órbita perturbada por outro corpo gelado ou pela gravidade de uma estrela que passa pelo Sistema Solar. Isso pode fazer com que o corpo gelado seja lançado em direção ao Sistema Solar interno, onde se torna um cometa. A Nuvem de Oort provavelmente se estende de alguns milhares de unidades astronômicas (UA) a talvez mais de cem mil UA, a meio caminho de Próxima Centauri, a estrela mais próxima do Sol. A parte interna da Nuvem de Oort provavelmente tem a forma de um anel espesso (semelhante a um donut), mas a parte externa provavelmente é uma camada esférica.
