Description: L'ottica è la scienza della luce e delle sue interazioni con la materia e l'arte di costruire strumenti che sfruttano i principi generali delle interazioni luce-materia. In astronomia, le "ottiche" di un telescopio o di uno strumento sono quelle parti che guidano la luce verso un rilevatore, in particolare specchi, lenti, maschere, fenditure o guide d'onda per quanto riguarda la luce visibile, nonché elementi dispersivi come prismi e reticoli che producono spettri. L'ottica attiva è il termine che indica uno specchio mantenuto nella forma corretta da elementi meccanici attivi ("attuatori"), mentre l'ottica adattiva è un sistema che consente di deformare rapidamente uno specchio nel modo giusto per contrastare le perturbazioni atmosferiche (lo "scintillio" delle stelle). L'aggettivo "ottico" è usato anche per indicare l'astronomia che utilizza la luce visibile.
