Glossary term: ottica adattiva
Description: Quando si alza lo sguardo di notte, si possono vedere le stelle scintillare. L'aria nell'atmosfera è sempre in movimento e, quando la luce di una stella attraversa una regione con turbolenze, viene deviata in misura variabile. Per questo motivo, ciò che possiamo vedere nel cielo non è un singolo punto di luce fisso per ogni stella, ma una successione danzante, mutevole e distorta di punti. Per gli astronomi, il crepuscolo significa che non possono scattare immagini degli oggetti celesti con tutti i dettagli che altrimenti i loro grandi telescopi a terra consentirebbero. L'ottica adattiva è un modo per mitigare questo effetto. Utilizzando una stella reale o una "stella artificiale" proiettata al laser, un sistema di ottica adattiva ("AO") controlla la distorsione atmosferica in tempo reale. La luce che entra nel telescopio viene guidata su uno specchio deformabile. Controllato da un computer, lo specchio viene continuamente deformato nel modo giusto per contrastare la distorsione atmosferica.
