Glossary term: Stella cadente
Description: Una stella cadente (o meteora) è un frammento di asteroide, cometa o detrito spaziale che entra nell'atmosfera della Terra o di un altro corpo celeste e prende fuoco a causa del calore generato dall'attrito con l'atmosfera. Il calore generato dall'attrito è simile al modo in cui ci scaldiamo le mani strofinandole quando abbiamo freddo. Le stelle cadenti hanno solitamente dimensioni molto piccole, che vanno da pochi millimetri a qualche centimetro. Gli astronomi le chiamano meteore. La loro direzione, il periodo dell'anno in cui le osserviamo e il loro colore ci permettono di saperne di più sulla loro origine e sulla loro composizione.
Le meteore più luminose sono chiamate bolidi e spesso possono essere osservate anche di giorno. In alcune occasioni, testimoni hanno persino riferito di aver sentito dei suoni mentre queste bruciavano e viaggiavano attraverso l'atmosfera. Le stelle cadenti provocano anche la ionizzazione dell'atmosfera, che per le stelle cadenti nell'atmosfera terrestre può essere osservata con il radar.
Sulla Terra, le stelle cadenti sono visibili durante tutto l'anno, ma occasionalmente molte stelle cadenti si verificano in tempi brevi, ad esempio nella stessa notte. Molti di questi sciami meteorici si ripetono secondo schemi annuali prevedibili e hanno ricevuto nomi basati sulla costellazione da cui le meteore sembrano provenire (o irradiarsi). Tra le meteore più famose ci sono le Perseidi e le Leonidi.
