Description: 광년은 천문학에서 별까지의 거리나 은하 사이의 거리와 같이 먼 천문학적 거리를 표현하는 데 종종 사용되는 길이의 단위입니다. 빛은 1초에 약 30만 km를 가는데, 광년은 빛이 진공 상태에서 1년 동안 이동하는 거리로 정의됩니다. 이 거리는 9.46조 킬로미터(km), 즉 9.5x10¹² km입니다. "광년" 단위를 사용하면 먼 거리를 숫자로 더 쉽게 표현할 수 있습니다. 태양에서 가장 가까운 별은 40조 킬로미터 떨어 있는데, 즉 4.25광년 이라고 말합니다. 천문학자들은 광분(light minute) 또는 광시(light hours) 단위도 사용합니다. 빛이 태양에서 지구까지 오는데 약 8분, 해왕성까지 가는데 약 4시간이 걸립니다. 다만, 광년은 천문학 연구에서는 거의 사용되지 않으며, 파섹(parsec, 약 3.26광년)이 거리 측정에 더 많이 사용됩니다.
