Description: Um ano-luz é uma unidade de comprimento às vezes usada em astronomia para expressar grandes distâncias astronômicas, como distâncias até estrelas ou entre galáxias. É definido como a distância que a luz percorre no vácuo em um ano: 9,46 trilhões de quilômetros (km), ou seja, 9,5x10¹² km. Ao utilizar a unidade “ano-luz”, essas grandes distâncias tornam-se numericamente mais fáceis de lidar: a estrela mais próxima do Sol está a 40 trilhões de km de distância ou, de forma mais simples, a 4,25 anos-luz. Os astrônomos também usam as unidades minutos-luz ou horas-luz: a luz leva cerca de oito minutos para ir do Sol à Terra e cerca de quatro horas para chegar a Netuno. O termo ano-luz é raramente usado na pesquisa astronômica, onde o parsec (aproximadamente 3,26 anos-luz) é a medida preferida de distância.
