Description: 입자 물리학은 물질을 이루는 가장 작은 구성 요소를 연구하는 물리학의 한 분야입니다. 원자를 이루는 입자들(전자, 양성자, 중성자)뿐 아니라, 중성자와 양성자를 이루는 더 작은 입자들, 즉 쿼크(quark)도 포함됩니다. 과학자들은 입자 가속기라는 장치를 이용해 이런 입자들을 매우 빠른 속도로 움직이게 하고 서로 충돌시킵니다. 그 결과, 새로운 입자들이 만들어지는데 그중에는 매우 짧은 시간 동안만 존재하는 입자들도 있습니다. 입자가 높은 에너지로 충돌하여 다양한 유형의 다른 입자가 생성됩니다. 이렇게 발견된 모든 기본 입자와 그들이 서로 어떻게 상호작용하는지는 입자물리학의 표준모형에 의해 설명됩니다. 자연에도 입자 가속기와 비슷한 현상이 있습니다. 예를 들어, 초신성 폭발이나 블랙홀(항성질량 또는 초대질량 블랙홀)에서 뿜어져 나오는 제트는 입자를 아주 빠르게 가속시키는 자연 입자 가속기입니다. 이렇게 가속된 입자들은 우주선(cosmic ray)이 되어 지구에까지 도달합니다.
