Description: A física de partículas é o ramo da física que estuda os menores constituintes da matéria, incluindo as partículas que compõem os átomos (elétrons, nêutrons e prótons), bem como as partículas que compõem os nêutrons e prótons (os chamados quarks). Essas e outras partículas mais exóticas e de vida curta podem ser produzidas em aceleradores de partículas. Lá, essas partículas são colididas a altas energias, resultando na produção de vários outros tipos de partículas. Todas as partículas elementares conhecidas e suas interações são descritas pelo chamado modelo padrão da física de partículas. Alguns objetos astrofísicos, em especial os jatos de buracos negros de massa estelar ou supermassivos, ou explosões de supernovas, funcionam como aceleradores naturais de partículas. As partículas cósmicas aceleradas dessa forma chegam até nós como raios cósmicos.
