Glossary term: 엑스선망원경
Description: 엑스선망원경은 사람의 눈에는 보이지 않는 고에너지 X선(엑스선) 복사를 관측하기 위해 특별히 설계된 망원경입니다. X선은 가시광선보다 훨씬 높은 주파수와 짧은 파장을 가지며, 그 성질 때문에 일반적인 반사망원경이나 굴절망원경으로는 관측이 불가능합니다. 지구의 대기는 X선을 완전히 흡수하기 때문에, 엑스선망원경은 지상에 설치할 수 없고, 주로 인공위성이나 우주선에 탑재된 우주망원경 형태로 운영됩니다. X선은 거울 표면에 정면으로 부딪히면 거의 모두 흡수되므로, 엑스선망원경은 “사입사(grazing incidence)”라 불리는 특수한 방식으로 빛을 반사시킵니다. 즉, X선이 거울에 매우 얕은 각도로 닿아 거울의 표면을 미끄러지듯 반사되도록 설계되어 있습니다. 이를 위해 거울을 여러 겹의 동심원 껍질 형태로 배치한 ‘집속 거울 어셈블리(focusing mirror assembly)’가 사용됩니다. 그러나 에너지가 특히 높은 ‘하드(hard) X선’ 영역에서는 이러한 반사가 거의 일어나지 않기 때문에, 빛을 직접 초점에 모으는 대신, 특정한 패턴의 마스크를 이용해 X선이 들어오는 방향 정보를 해석하고, 이 데이터를 바탕으로 이미지를 재구성하는 방법이 사용됩니다.
