Description: Na física, o gás é um estado da matéria em que as moléculas ou átomos estão fracamente ligados entre si, permitindo um movimento constante e caótico, com átomos e moléculas se movendo em todas as direções a diferentes velocidades. O ar que respiramos é uma mistura de gases, como nitrogênio molecular e oxigênio. A energia média do movimento é uma medida da temperatura do gás. O principal efeito responsável pela pressão de um gás (exercida, por exemplo, sobre as paredes de um recipiente) é o impacto das partículas de gás nessas paredes e o recuo resultante. Na astronomia, os gases podem ser encontrados como constituintes de nuvens de gás interestelares, nuvens moleculares gigantes, gás intergaláctico ou o gás da atmosfera planetária. Em um leve uso impreciso da linguagem, os astrônomos também se referem ao plasma (onde os átomos em questão são ionizados) como gás — por exemplo, quando chamam as estrelas de “bolas de gás” ou se referem ao gás girando em um disco de acreção.
